History

Volleyball appeared in China in 1905 in the southern regions of the country - Hong Kong and Guangzhou . In 1913 they began to study it in cities located on the coasts of the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian . According to the FIVB rules (6x6), volleyball began to be cultivated in China in the late 1940s.

1949-1962

Volleyball in the country received significant development after 1949 . Trips of Chinese volleyball players to the countries of Eastern Europe were organized to study the technique and tactics of the game. In 1953 , the Volleyball Association of China was created, which in the same year joined the FIVB . Three years later, the formed women's national team took part in the World Cup , held in the French capital Paris . In their first match at the tournament on August 30, the Chinese confidently beat the Austrian team with a score of 3: 0 (15: 1, 15: 2, 15: 3). In the future, the Chinese team won three more victories and lost 6 times, taking up 6th place in the end, letting forward only strong Eastern European teams.

Subsequently, until 1974, the Chinese national team took part in only one international tournament - the 1962 World Cup (9th place). The actual self-isolation of Chinese volleyball and sports in general was associated with domestic political problems and the conflict surrounding the recognition of Taiwan's sports federations under the flag of the Republic of China .

1974-1980

In 1974, the national team of the People's Republic of China was again among the participants of the world championship held in Mexico , and the question of who will represent China was decided only on the eve of the championship, when the FIVB decided to give the place to the national team of the Republic of China (Taiwan) that won the ticket during the Asian qualification PRC team. The hastily assembled team performed unsuccessfully, taking only 14th place among 23 participants.

Since the mid-1970s, China's volleyball has finally returned to the international arena. The results of the national team are getting better every year. In 1978, Chinese women took the 6th place at the World Championships in the USSR , not getting into the semifinals only by the worst ratio of parties during the group round, and in 1979 they won the “gold” of the Asian Championship , beating all their rivals, including the current Olympic champion and silver medalist of the world championship the national team of Japan with a score of 3: 1. Since that time, the women's national team of China has firmly declared itself as one of the strongest volleyball teams in the world.

In 1980, Chinese women were supposed to make their debut at the Olympics , but due to China’s boycott of the Moscow Olympics, the debut had to be postponed for 4 years.

1981-1990

China Women's Team 1982 World Champion

Most of the 1980s (1981-1987) was marked by the hegemony of the Chinese team in the international arena. In 1981, she became the owner of the World Cup , a year later she won the World Cup , defeating the Japanese in the semifinals, and the Peruvians in the final of the tournament hosts . In 1984, the Chinese team won the Olympics , defeating the US team 3-0 in the final. This triple victory in 1981-1984. a monument in the city of Zhangzhou , erected in 1986 ( Chinese. 漳州 三 连冠 纪念碑 ) [2] [3], is dedicated to world-class competitions. In 1985, the Chinese women again became the strongest during the World Cup , and in 1986 they defended the title of world champions without losing a single match during the tournament. In addition, the Chinese team during this period was twice stronger than everyone else at the Asian Games ( 1982 and 1986 ) and in 1987 won the Asian Championship . During this time, only once (in 1983 ) did the Japanese national team manage to get ahead of the Chinese at their home championship in Asia .

China Women's Team - Two-time World Champion (1986)

The Chinese team achieved these outstanding successes under the guidance of coaches Yuan Weimin (who headed the national team from 1976 to 1984), who was replaced after the Olympics-84 by Dan Zhozen and Zhang Rongfang , who became the Olympic champion in the team in 1984 and led the national team in 1986. A characteristic feature of the game of the national team was a combination of the best qualities of Asian volleyball (speed, combination, tenacity in defense) with the strengths of European-North American volleyball, which was more inherent in athleticism and power in attacking actions. The leaders of the Chinese team of the “golden” period were such outstanding volleyball players as Lang Ping, Yang Silan, Zheng Meizhu, Zhang Rongfang, Zhou Xiaolan, Hou Yuzhu, Jiang Ying, Li Yanjun, Liang Yan, Yang Xiaojun and others.

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, the Chinese team rode in the rank of the undisputed favorite, but in the semifinal it was unexpectedly defeated by the USSR national team 0: 3 (0:15, 9:15, 2:15). The Chinese women still managed to win bronze medals by defeating the Japanese team 3-0 in the match for 3rd place. A year later, the Chinese team also became the third at the World Cup , and in 1990 at the home world championships they lost to the Soviet volleyball players in the final with a score of 1: 3, although before that they had not lost a single set in the tournament.

1991-2000

The first half of the 1990s was marked by a slight decline in the results of the Chinese national team against the backdrop of a generational change in the national team. And while on the Asian continent the Chinese team practically did not know their peers (10 consecutive top titles at the Asian championships in the period 1987-2005), then at the world level, the only achievement of the Chinese was the “silver” at the 1991 World Cup . The Olympics-92 (7th place) and the 1994 World Cup (8th place) ended in painful setbacks for the team.

Lan pin

After these failures, the national team of China was headed by one of the most outstanding volleyball players in the country, the leader of the "golden" team of the early 80s, Lan Ping. Under her leadership, a noticeably updated team became a bronze medalist at the 1995 World Cup , and the following year she won silver at the Olympic Games in Atlanta ( USA ), having defeated the Russian team 3: 1 in the semi-finals of the Olympic tournament, and losing in the final with the same score in a stubborn fight against the Cuban team . The new leaders of the team were Qu Yunmei, Lai Yawen, Sun Yue, Li Yan, Wu Yunmei, Zhu Yunin, He Qi, Wang Jilin, Wang Ling and others.

Two years later, at the next world championship in Japan, the Chinese team in the same sequence met with the same opponents at the decisive stage of the championship and with the same success - a confident victory in the semifinals over Russia 3: 0 and defeat in the final from 0-3 cubes . In fairness, it should be noted that for a decade of the 90s, the Cuban team was the absolute hegemon in women's volleyball, having won all possible titles during this period (three times the Olympics, twice the World Cup and three times the World Cup).

After the 1998 World Cup, Lang Ping left the post of coach of the team. Hu Jin, already heading the national team in 1991-1995, became her successor, but after failure at the 2000 Olympics (relegation to the quarter finals and 5th place), he was dismissed. Chen Zhonghe , who has worked in this post for almost 8 years, has been appointed head coach of the national team.

2001—2010

Under the leadership of a new mentor, Chinese volleyball players excelled in the 2001 World Cup , played the Grand Prix finals twice in a row ( 2001 and 2002 ), still had no equal in Asia (victories in the championship of the continent and the Asian Games ), became fourth in the 2002 World Cup losing in the semifinals to the future Italians and losing in the match for the 3rd place of the Russian national team . The following year, the Chinese team won all the tournaments in which it participated - the Grand Prix , the Asian Championship , the World Cup .

The year 2004 brought the Chinese team the Olympic gold. In the semifinals of the Olympic volleyball tournament in Athens , the Cuban team was defeated in five sets. In the final, Chinese volleyball players met with the Russian team . Having lost in the stubborn struggle the first two sets, in the future, the Chinese women managed to tip the scales in their direction and won 3: 2. The best players of that team were team captain Feng Kun, Zhang Ping, Yang Hao, Zhou Suhong, Liu Yan'an, Zhang Na, Wang Ling, Zhang Yuehong. The Chinese did not stop even the absence due to injury to their leading volleyball player Zhao Ruijui.

In the subsequent results of the Chinese team, there has been a decline. At the 2006 World Cup, the Chinese team was considered one of the main favorites, but the defeat at the group stage from the teams of Russia and Brazil did not allow the Chinese volleyball players to fight for medals. The result - 5th place. The following year, for the first time in 20 years, Chinese women lost the championship at the Asian Championships .

The main bet after the failures was made on the home Olympics-2008 , but the Chinese team didn’t look very convincing either for various reasons. Having suffered two defeats in five matches at the group stage, the Chinese team defeated the Russian team in the quarterfinals in three games, after which nothing could match the Brazilian team in the semifinals. And yet, in the match for the “bronze" Chinese women with a score of 3: 1 were stronger than the Cuban team .

In 2009, Cai Bin, who previously headed the country's youth team, became the head coach of the Chinese national team. Under his leadership, the Chinese team first took only 5th place at the Grand Prix , and then sensationally lost to the Thai team in the finals of the Asian Championship with a score of 1: 3. After failures, organizational conclusions followed and Tsai Bin was dismissed.

In early 2010 , Wang Baoquan was appointed coach, but his tenure as head coach lasted only until August of that year, after which, due to health reasons, he left his post. Yu Tszyuemin took the Chinese team to the World Cup , before that he worked as an assistant to the head coach. The performance of the Chinese team at the world championship ended in complete failure. Having gained only 3 victories in seven matches at the preliminary stage, the Chinese volleyball players got the opportunity to fight only for 9-12 places. The result of the performance was only 10th place. And only the victory of the national team at the Asian Games in November of the same year retained the post of mentor for Yu Jiuemin, thus avoiding the leapfrog of the national team of the country.

2011 - n. at.

China team. Grand Prix 2012

For 2010-2012, the Chinese team underwent a significant update. For the 2012 Olympics , only 4 volleyball players remained from the 2008 Olympic squad. And if in the pre-Olympic 2011, the team’s results showed an upsurge (the return of the title of the strongest Asian team in the continental championship , “bronze” in the World Cup ), then in 2012 the team’s performance again did not live up to expectations, especially at the Olympic Games in London , where the Chinese women stopped fight for medals at the quarterfinal stage, losing to the Japanese team in five sets.

In April 2013, Lang Ping was appointed head coach of the Chinese national team again, after a 15-year hiatus, who had previously worked as a mentor for a number of Italian teams and the US national team (2005-2008). The first official tournament under the leadership of a new-old coach ended successfully overall - 2nd place at the Grand Prix . But at the next Asian Championships, the Chinese team suffered a sensitive defeat, losing in the semifinals to the hostesses of the Thai national championship in five sets, and then in the match for bronze medals and the Japanese team in five games too. Thus, for the first time, the Chinese team was left without medals of the Asian continental championship.

In 2014, the Chinese team to a large extent regained some lost ground in world volleyball. At the World Championships held in Italy , Chinese volleyball players reached the final, where in a bitter struggle they lost to the US team 1: 3 and became silver medalists of the championship.

In 2015, the Chinese national team continued its progressive movement, first regaining the title of the strongest Asian team in the home championship of the continent , and then having excelled in the World Cup .

2016 brought the Chinese team the third in its history Olympic gold. The Chinese team started the Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro hard, taking only the 4th place in their preliminary stage group. Confidently in three games only the national teams of Italy and Puerto Rico were beaten, and the Chinese lost to the teams of the Netherlands , Serbia and the USA . In the quarterfinals, the Chinese team was forced to play with the winner of another group - the Brazilian national team , which had not given a single set to their rivals before. The stubborn duel unexpectedly ended in favor of China 3: 2 (15:25, 25:23, 25:22, 22:25, 15:13). Equally difficult, but already in four sets, the semifinal match of the Chinese volleyball players with the Dutch was formed, again bringing victory to the Chinese women 3: 1 (27:25, 23:25, 29:27, 25:23). In the final, the Chinese team again had to play with Serbia. The group match of these rivals ended with a confident victory for the Serbs 3-0, but the Chinese women could not be stopped in the decisive match. Having lost the first game with a score of 19:25, in the future, Asian volleyball players seized the initiative and were stronger in the next three sets 25:17, 25:22, 25:23, becoming the victors of the Olympics volleyball tournament. The most valuable player of the tournament was recognized as the Chinese striker Zhu Ting .

In 2017, Lang Ping was appointed head coach of all women's national teams of China, and her former assistant An Jiajie became the mentor of the main national team. Under his leadership, Chinese volleyball players excelled in the World Champions Cup , winning all 5 matches played at the tournament. In 2018, Lang Ping returned to the post of head coach of the national team.

In 2018, the main team of the Chinese team took part in three tournaments - the League of Nations , the Asian Games and the World Cup . In July, the Chinese women took the final stage of the first League of Nations draw and took 3rd place, losing in the semi-final to the future winner - the US team . In the Asian Games volleyball tournament, the Chinese team won all of their 8 matches without giving even one game to their rivals. At the world championship in Japan, the Chinese national team rode in the rank of one of the undisputed favorites and in 10 matches of three group stages suffered only one defeat, but in the semifinal against the Italian team they could not cope primarily with Paola Egon , who showed outstanding performance in that match - 45 points. The result - the defeat of the Olympic champions 2: 3. A confident victory in the match for 3rd place over the Netherlands team brought the Chinese volleyball players the bronze awards of the tournament.
