History

The “Curse of Hawaii” is often seen as a kind of continuation of “ Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas ” - as is the case with the Mint 400 motorcycle race in downtown Las Vegas , Thompson has the goal of writing an article for a sports magazine [1] .

It is noted that in the surreal “Curse of Hawaii” it is very difficult to separate the truth from fiction: for example, Thompson writes that he was in Hawaii the only time and spent many days on the island - in fact, the writer collected material for the novel during two trips, but to determine them the border in the work itself is impossible [2] . Other aspects of the novel are completely reliable: for example, the implausible capture by the authorThe 308-pound marlin was captured in a photograph that Hunter sent to his friend, artist Ralph Steadman. [3]

The Curse of Hawaii, illustrated by Steadman, was released in a limited edition of 1,000 copies in 1983; it was reprinted only once in 2005 [4] . The final version of the novel randomly combines excerpts from the books The Captain Cook's Last Journey by Richard Howe and Mark Twain's Letters from Hawaii, several letters from Hunter Thompson to Ralph Steadman, and the actual story The Curse of Hawaii, which the author presents now, now past tense.

Story

Hunter Thompson traveled to Hawaii to light up the annual running marathon in Honolulu , and then celebrate Christmas in Kona Village, along with his bride, son, Ralph and his family. The expected calm and carefree vacation on the sunny coast turned into a multi-day struggle for the company with heavy rain and huge waves.

Heated by alcohol and drugs, Hunter, with his new acquaintances, Ackerman and Steve, took a dangerous boat trip to the sea, with the aim of catching marlin - the storm nearly killed the trinity. Returning to Kona, the journalist found that Stadman could not stand the harsh weather and flew home to England .

Thirsty in debt, Thompson and Ackerman planned the transportation of local hemp to the United States . On the last day of his stay in Hawaii, Hunter decided to go fishing again at sea. This time the writer was lucky, and he killed a giant marlin with a fighting Samoan club. Hunter returned to the island, covering the crowd with curses, brandishing a club and calling himself the god Lono .

The result of this recklessness was an escape to the City of the Saved - the only place where a person can not be afraid of the attack of his persecutors. The novel does not have a clear end. The reader leaves Hunter Thompson in the City of the Saved, the future fate of the journalist is unknown.
