Biography
In 1993, Valery Fokin graduated from the Department of Chemistry of Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N. I. Lobachevsky . In 1998, he received a PhD from the University of Southern California . Fokin held a postdoctoral internship in the catalytic oxidation of alkenes at the Scripps Research Institute. In 2000, at this institute he received the position of assistant ( Assistant Professor ) and in 2006 - associate professor ( Associate Professor ) [1] . In 2012, Fokin became a visiting professor at the Department of Innovative Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology [2] under a grant from the Government of Russia [3] . Since 2015, Fokine has been a professor of chemistry at the University of Southern California . [4] Fokin - President of the Russian-American Scientific Association RASA-USA in 2016-2018.
Scientific activity
In 2002, a group of Danish chemist Morten Meldahl [5] and a group of Barry Sharpless and Valery Fokin [6] independently discovered the azide-alkine cycloaddition reaction . Despite the fact that Danish scientists discovered the reaction first, they did not see any significant potential in it, having tested it on peptides in organic solvents. The Sharpless and Fokin groups described the reaction as allowing to achieve "an unprecedented level of selectivity, reliability and applicability in cases where it is necessary to create covalent bonds between various building blocks." Fokine was the first to discover the azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction in water in the presence of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or its salt. In September 2013, Thompson Reuters experts named Valery Fokin and Barry Sharpless candidates for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry [7] [8] .
