History

Archaeological finds indicate that already about 12,000 years ago, Stone Age hunters lived on the outskirts of Steertmoore in Bexhöfed. The first documented mention of the settlement dates back to the 12th century. As part of the territorial reform, on March 1, 1974, Beckshöfede ceased to be an independent member of the Loxstedt Community Union and became part of the Loxstedt community.

Church

The predominant type of Romanesque church buildings in the triangle between Elba and Weser is a church with one longitudinal nave and square or rectangular choirs. The cobblestone churches spread along the banks of the Weser were built using sandstone from the Weser mountainous country . Well preserved is the Church of St. John the Baptist in Bexhofed with vaulted nave and choirs . It is located in close proximity to the place of the former castle, the residence of a noble family , originating from Bexhöfede. In 1199, Albert Buxgevden from this family became the bishop of Livonia , and in 1200 he founded the city of Riga . The founders built between 1178 and 1184. the churches in Bexhöfede were Geldmar, Albert and Lüder Bexhöfede. The church’s features include its impressive vaulted interior. Old choirs have cross cobblestones of cobblestone and tuff from the time of the construction of the church. Both cross vaults of the nave have castle mounts made of sandstone and wedges made of bricks . Such an early appearance of bricks is quite unusual, on the other hand, there are only two axes of windows in the nave - no more than arches. Thus, vaulted ceilings were created around 1200; the exact date, however, cannot be established.

Current status

For many decades, the settlement has a pronounced suburban character : its residential quarters are built up with mansions. Many residents daily use transport to travel to work in Bremerhaven and vice versa. In the old center of the village there are several hotels , and not far from federal highway 71 - several horticultural farms. Over the past few years, not a single grocery store has been operating in Bexhöfed, but a supermarket, two gas stations and a slaughterhouse are still open.

In Germany, Bexhöphede is known as the place where the fairy tale about the hare and the hedgehog was composed, which was first told in Bexhöphede and only then the place of its action was changed to Buxthehude , probably due to the fact that Buxheveden (Bexhöphede) was not widely known at that time.

Transport

The village is connected to the network of national roads by federal highway 71 , which runs from north to south, and to neighboring Loxstedt and Donnern , land highway 143, which runs from east to west. , during school hours, cruising on highway 71 with a stop at Loxstedt and Schiffdorf . Since February 2006, a BremerhavenBus shuttle bus has been operating, departing hourly to the Loxstedt train station and to Bremerhaven-Wulsdorf .
