Biography

Born in 1851. In 1875 he graduated from the course of science at St. Petersburg University in the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics with a degree of candidate. In the same year he was appointed supernumerary laboratory assistant at the chemical laboratory of the same university.

In 1877, he was confirmed as a full-time laboratory assistant at the same laboratory. In 1879 he moved to the same position at the University of St. Vladimir. In 1881, after defending a thesis on the topic “On the question of the rate of chemical reactions,” he was approved as a privat-docent in chemistry.

Studying the rate of dissolution of magnesium in acids , Cajander showed that it depends on the nature of acids and the presence of neutral salts, is directly proportional to temperature and inversely proportional to the internal friction of the solution.

In 1881, he came to the conclusion that the dissolved substances disintegrate into component parts, that is, they essentially anticipated the main thesis of the theory of electrolytic dissociation. In the position of privat-docent, he lectured on theoretical chemistry during the whole of 1883. In 1884 he left the service of the Ministry of Education.

He died in 1896.
