Description

Campo is considered one of the most picturesque and unique places in Venice. The main reason for this is the proximity of the most famous and accessible place for the manufacture of gondolas for tourists - the San Trovazo shipyard . It is located in the southeast corner of the square.

Both identical facades of the church of San Trovazo , a typical example of Renaissance architecture, go out onto the square [1] . According to legend, they were built by two warring clans that did not want to collide at the entrance and exit of the church.

Campo is located on two tiers: part of the second, which is slightly lower, is overgrown with grass. In the northwest, the campo goes around the church. From two sides it is washed by canals: Rio San Trovazo from the east and Rio Onisanti from the south. Therefore, the campo has almost no palaces ( palazzo ). But it is necessary to mention the Gothic facade of the Palazzo Barbarigo Nani Mocenigo , which looks at the campo through the channel of San Trovazo [2] .

Title

The square owes its strange name (a saint with the name of Trovazo) to the early Christian martyrs Hervasius and Protasius , to whom the church of San Trovazo was dedicated [3] .

In popular culture

Piazza San Trovazo can be seen in the computer game Assassin's Creed II , whose actions unfold at the end of the 15th century [4] . Several game missions unfold on the territory of the square, as well as a mission from the sequel to Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood [5] .
