Biography

Born in 1867 in the family of a famous businessman, member of the Hong Kong Parliament, Francis Balkley-Johnson [1] and his wife, Jeanne Sophia. [2] His male ancestors came from the Scottish local nobility. [3] He received his secondary education at the prestigious Harrow Private School. He completed his professional military education at Sandhurst Military College .

A career officer of the illustrious [4] Royal Scottish Gray Dragoons, [5] Charles was released from Sandhurst as 2nd Lieutenant into the 2nd Dragoon Regiment (Royal Scottish Gray Dragoons) on February 5, 1887. Since March 16, 1889 - lieutenant. Captain since June 13, 1894.

From 1898 to 1899 he was part of the Egyptian army, took part in the “ Nile Expedition ” in Sudan , which led to the defeat of the Caliph - one of only two regiment officers (and 44 privates) who were temporarily transferred to strengthen the “Heavy Camel Corps” . He commanded a squadron at the Battle of Umm-Divaykarat on November 25, 1899, deserving a "mention in the report." [6]

In the Second Boer War - with a regiment in the 1st Cavalry Brigade of Brigadier General Porter. [7] Participated in the protection of British communications between the rivers Modder and Orange, in lifting the siege of Kimberley, the release of British prisoners of war from Boer concentration camps, counter-guerrilla actions of the regiment against the "irreconcilable" Boers until 1902. He returned with a regiment to Great Britain in 1905.

On August 19, 1911, he was appointed commander of the 2nd Dragoon Regiment; in 1914, under his command, the Gray Scots were brought to a 3-squadron composition - 4 platoons of 33 people in a squadron.

At the beginning of the Great War, the Gray Scots were assigned to the 5th Cavalry Brigade of the British Expeditionary Force in Belgium. During the “ run to the sea ” - the retreat of the British under the pressure of superior German forces through the territory of Belgium to the Pas de Calais and English Channel - the Gray Scots [9] under the command of Balkley-Johnson repeatedly distinguished themselves in carrying out barrage and counterattacks that prevented the complete defeat of the British Expeditionary Force.

On November 23, 1914, for personal courage and skillful command of the Balkley-Johnson Regiment, he was appointed commander of the 8th Cavalry Brigade [10] of the 3rd Cavalry Division of the British Expeditionary Force with the rank of brigadier general, and on November 27, 1914, was awarded the Russian Order of St. George IV degree. Exactly 10 months later - now already for the skillful command of the 8th brigade - he was awarded the same Order of the 3rd degree, which made him the only allied officer awarded with crosses of two degrees for participating in the First World War.

Brigadier General Balkley-Johnson was mortally wounded on the Western Front during reconnaissance on April 11, 1917 . He died on the same day in the town of Monschie-les-Prés at the age of 49, which made him the 13th British general who died on the fronts of the First World War. [eleven]

He was buried in France at the military site of the cemetery of the commune of Grua y Artois. [12]
