Biography
Alessandro Grandi, was born in 1586 according to one version in Ferrara, according to another he was a native of Sicily. Got a musical education in Venice from Giovanni Gabrieli.
He lived for a long time in Ferrara, where he served as bandmaster in various cathedrals and during church fraternities — the Academia della Morte and the Academy of Santo Spirito. Here in 1610 he published his first collection of motets.
In 1617, he received a singer's place in the choir of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice. During these years, he was an assistant to Claudio Monteverdi, who served as choirmaster in the basilica. Here, the composer wrote a number of works of small form and released several of his collections.
In 1627, Alessandro Grandi moved to Bergamo, where he received the position of bandmaster in the cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore. Here the composer met Heinrich Schütz. He wrote three cantatas, the first of which appeared in 1629.
Alessandro Grandi died in 1630 in Bergamo during a plague in Europe.
Creative heritage
Most of the composer's works are vocal works with instrumental accompaniment. Stylistically, his early works are similar to the works of his teacher Giovanni Gabrieli.
Most of his early compositions are songs for two to three voices. Alessandro Grandi was one of the few composers who, along with monodies, composed works of vocal polyphony and continuo bass, while most composers of the early Baroque era preferred monodia with continuo bass or more homophonic textures.
The composer's works are extremely emotional. He was one of the most popular composers of his time. His works were published in Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, reprinted for a long time after the death of the author.
The composer's creative heritage includes motets, psalms, madrigals and cantatas.
