The building was built in the style of modernism by the architect Edgar Fonseca in 1964 - 1979 . The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Sebastian , the patron saint of the city and is the department of the Archdiocese of San Sebastian do Rio de Janeiro . Prior to this, from the middle of the 18th century, the cathedral was the Church of Our Lady of Karmil , today it is a social department .
The cathedral is located in the city center. The building has a conical shape with an internal diameter of 96 m and an external 106 m. Height - 75 m. Inside, there can be up to 20,000 people . The length of rectangular stained-glass windows reaches 64 m.
