Biography
Alexander Gorbov was born on May 23, 1857 in the city of Moscow.
In 1878 he graduated from high school in Orel and in the same year entered the University of St. Petersburg at the natural department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics [1] .
In 1882 he graduated from the university with a degree of candidate of natural sciences. After graduation, he was engaged in chemistry under the guidance of Professor A. M. Butlerov, first in the university’s laboratory, and then in the laboratory of the Academy of Sciences. Since 1886 he was in the service as a laboratory assistant at the analytical department of technical chemistry.
From 1894 - head of the chemical laboratory at the Nikolaev Engineering Academy in St. Petersburg , from 1918 to 1924 - professor of the laboratory.
In 1906-1912, together with Professor V. F. Mitkevich, he designed and built the first experimental electric furnace in Russia to produce nitric acid from air using the electric arc method (the “Gorbov-Mitkevich furnace”).
One of the active members of the Russian Physicochemical Society .
Chairman of the Sapropel Committee of the Commission for the Study of Natural Productive Forces of Russia at the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Member of the Council of the Russian Institute of Applied Chemistry.
Since 1927 - editor of the journal Applied Chemistry.
In 1921 he was arrested under the Tagantsev Case (case of the Petrograd Military Organization), but was released after the petitions. In 1934 - took place in absentia in the case of the "counter-revolutionary national fascist organization" Russian National Party ". [2]
