History
In 1218, Solothurn received the status of an imperial city . In 1381, the city received the right to mint coins, but in fact minted it already from about 1300. In 1481, the canton joined the Swiss Union .
In 1798, Solothurn became part of the Helvetic Republic , in the same year a single monetary unit was introduced - the franc of the Helvetic Republic , minting of canton coins was discontinued.
The act of mediation of February 19, 1803 ceased the existence of the Helvetic Republic. The cantons received substantial independence, including the possibility of minting their own coin again. The canton resumed its own coinage in 1805, but the canton's new monetary unit was no longer a thaler, but a Solothurn franc .
