Biography
In 1747, the government of Empress Maria Theresa, in gratitude for the help provided by the Hungarians in the war for the Austrian inheritance , decided to give them the lands of the landmilitia of Podunai, Potis and Pomorish, and to resettle the Serbs living in these places further to the borders of Turkey. The Serbs did not want to submit to this decision; unrest arose between them, and finally, Colonel Ivan Horvat , Lieutenant Colonels Dmitry Horvat and Ivan Shevich and captains brothers N. and F. Chorba came to the idea of moving to Russia.
At the beginning of 1751, they submitted a petition to the Ambassador in Vienna, Count M.P. Bestuzhev-Rumin . I. Horvath promised that he would recruit a regiment of hussars of 1000 people from Serbs and other Slavic peoples and a regiment of panduras of 2000 people from Greeks; he requested only land for settlement and reimbursement.
In 1751, with the rank of captain, N.I. Chorb arrived in Petersburg and was accepted into the Russian service as a major with the appointment to Novoserbia in the settled hussar regiments . In the rank of lieutenant colonel Chorba he was sent in 1757 to the then formed Sloboda Hussar Regiment , where he served until its abolition.
