Biography
The son of a priest. Graduated from Uppsala University . Since 1625 - Master of Arts.
In 1630 he traveled to Europe. In 1640 he became a professor of theology at Uppsala University.
During his career as a professor, he argued with the supporters of the philosophy of Petrus Ramus, University Chancellor Johan Schütte and Vice Chancellor Professor Laurentius Paulinus Gotus , who later became Archbishop of Uppsala, while Stigzelius himself defended the teachings of philosophers and scientists of Ancient Greece , in particular , scholastic aristotelism .
When Descartes' ideas spread widely at the university in the 1660s, Stigzelius was an adversary.
He had a reputation as a respected and highly knowledgeable university theology professor. His opinion was usually reckoned with at the university. So, he advocated the abolition of exorcism , as one of the tenets of the Protestant church (which is still used in Sweden).
In 1670 he became the archbishop of Sweden, already being at an advanced age and was him until his death in 1676 .
