Biography

The son of Bertrand II de Beau , Baron de Trogessan and Senor de Berr, and Berengaria de la Pen.

In 1308 he married Beatrice , the daughter of King Charles II and the widow of the Marquis of Azzo VIII d'Este , who brought him the county of Andria and the Viscountry of Misson. In January 1309, in reward for the services of his and his ancestors, Charles II additionally granted him the land of Squillace and the county of Montescalozo in Basilicata , and then added the privilege of higher jurisdiction in all the lands that Bertrand owned in the Sicilian kingdom, both on his own and on behalf of his wife.

The senator of Rome and the representative of the king in 1323, he was sent in 1326 to Tuscany as his captain-general to punish the Pisans who accepted the antipope of Nicholas V. At first, he achieved significant success, but then the Pisans turned to the Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria for help. Bertrand was defeated, but in 1329 returned to Tuscany, where he captured and destroyed several castles. Sent in 1330 by King Robert to help papa against Spinola, Senor Lucca , he was defeated and taken prisoner. Florentine captain-general in 1331, he acted so successfully against the Pisans that he forced Ludwig of Bavaria to retreat to Lombardy.

In 1335, King Robert sent him one of the ambassadors to the new Pope Benedict XII . In 1341 he granted him the castle of Tiano in the land of Bari .

Giovanna I appointed him in 1343 the great justice of the kingdom. In 1346, she presented him with Mizon Castle in Provence .

After the murder of Andrei Vengersky in Obverse (1345), it was Bertrand who was ordered by Pope Clement VI to find the murderers and judge them. Louis of Hungary , who arrived in Naples in 1348 to avenge the death of his brother, ordered that he beheaded in front of the palace where Andrei, Karl Durazzo , son-in-law of Giovanna , married to her sister Maria, was killed and taken away by the captives of Robert and Philip of Tarento, who had been in Hungary until 1352.

Bertrand died in Naples in 1351.
