Bloombach, Fedor Ivanovich

Biography

The son of a peasant. He was born in 1864 in the Courland province . After completing the course at the Mitava Classical Gymnasium, in 1883 he entered Yuryev University at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, the course of which he graduated in 1889.

Since 1885, he served as an observer at the Meteorological Observatory of Yuriev University. In May 1889 he entered the post of supernumerary astronomer of the Nikolaev Main Astronomical Observatory in Pulkovo. In 1890, he was sent abroad for a detailed acquaintance with the latest methods and tools of astro-physical research.

During his stay in Potsdam he monitored the production of astro-photographic instruments custom-made for the Pulkovo Observatory. After returning to Russia, he entered the post of keeper of the astronomical observatory of St. Petersburg University. Since May 1891 he was a supernumerary assistant at the Department of Physics of the Military Medical Academy .

Under the leadership of Mendeleev, Bloombach completed work on the implementation of the arshin standard and the establishment of exact ratios between Russian and metric length measures. Bloomach is the creator of the time laboratory in the Main Chamber. In 1896, 1906 and 1914, Bloombach led expeditions to observe total solar eclipses . In the last years of his life, Bloombach headed the Department of Astronomy of the Latvian State University .
