For the first time, Wiki Loves Monuments was held in 2010 in the Netherlands . The following year, the competition was held in several other European countries, and, according to the Guinness Book of Records , he broke the world record as a photo contest with the largest number of participants [1] . In 2012, this competition expanded beyond Europe: photographers from 35 countries took part in it [2] .
History
The first competition, called "National Monuments", the ( Dutch Rijksmonuments ) , was organized in 2010 to identify monuments and other cultural heritage sites in the Netherlands . “Reyksmonumenty” included buildings and other objects known for their beauty, scientific and / or cultural importance. Places such as the archaeological sites of Drenthe , in The Hague and the canals of Amsterdam were found in more than 12,500 photographs [3] .
Such success aroused interest in other European countries, and, thanks to cooperation with the European Heritage Days , 18 countries took part in the competition in 2011 [4] [5] , including Russia [6] , and participants during the competition uploaded about 170,000 images. The Guinness Book of Records contains a record of Wiki Loves Monuments-2011 as the largest photo contest with 168,208 images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by more than 5000 participants [1] .
In 2012, 35 countries took part in the competition: Andorra and Catalonia , Austria , Argentina , Belarus , Belgium , Ghana , Germany , Denmark , India , Israel , Italy , Spain , Canada , Kenya , Colombia , Luxembourg , Mexico , the Netherlands , Norway , Panama , Poland , Russia , Romania , Serbia , Slovakia , the United States of America , Switzerland , Sweden , Ukraine , the Philippines , France , Czech Republic , Chile , Estonia and the Republic of South Africa [2] . The competition was won by a photograph of Safdardjang's tomb located in Delhi , and in total more than 350,000 files were uploaded as part of its holding [7] [8] .
2013 Photography Winner
In 2013, 50 countries took part in the competition, more than 370 thousand photos were uploaded as part of the competition, 503 photos were selected for the final. The winner was a photo of the viaduct in Switzerland , taken in 2009 by a Swiss member of Wikimedia CommonsDavid Gubler [9] .
Rules
The basic rules for participation are simple. The participating country must provide a list of monuments with addresses and identifiers, and participants must upload photographs from September 1st to 30th. To participate you need to upload an image to Wikimedia Commons , which implies creating an account. Photos are taken that were created at any time, but uploaded in September and under the free CC-BY-SA 3.0 license (or any other compatible, for example, CC-BY or CC-0) [10] .
Competition Lists
In order to participate in the competition, the images must contain a monument from the list in order to be “encyclopedic”. Photographers should upload photos with an official identifier and geographical coordinates , although participants are usually not aware of this when they upload photos through a contest website or mobile application that adds this data on their own. Lists with these data are updated during the year and throughout the competition. At the moment, the participating country is a state where local volunteers created a competitive list (for example, in Russia a website with competitive lists was created by web designers of the Greenhouse of Social Technologies company with financial support from Rostelecom ). However, there are countries where the publication of entries is illegal or where photographs of monuments may not be suitable for Wikipedia.
Identification
To facilitate the task for participants, the lists contain addresses and other identification information on the Wiki Loves Monuments website [note 1] . The Wikimedia Foundation has developed a program for the Android operating system [11] , and the travel company MairDumont has developed an application for the iPhone [12] .
The task of the website and applications is to simplify the process of adding a unique photo identifier, since most participants upload photos to Wikimedia Commons for the first time and find it difficult to perform this operation on their own. The identifier and other information from the competition sheet is added to the photo at the time of upload: for example, the identifier for the monument at the address “Smedestraat 33, Haarlem” is 19695, it can be found on the competition website [note 2] .
| Description | Initial function | Created by | Location | Coordinates | room | A photo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haarlem , Smedestrat, 33: brick gates with a blind window | Border sign | XVII century | Smedestraat 33, Haarlem | 19695 |
In fact, this monument has already been photographed, but if it hadn’t, then to the right of it would be the gray button shown, by clicking which, it would be possible to go to the simplified download page via Wikimedia Commons.
