Quraysh schism
Abd Manaf was held in high esteem while his father was still alive, and his opinion was taken into account in all matters, but Kusai, before his death, gave all his powers to the first-born of Abd al-Dara. Kusai then said to Abd al-Dar: βI swear by Allah my son! I will make you the same as they are, even though they are ahead of you in authority. None of them will enter the Kaaba until you open it. No one will unfurl the banner of war to the Quraysh except you yourself. None of the pilgrims will eat except your food. Qurayshs will decide all their affairs in your house β [2] . Abd al-Dara was delegated authority in the council house, where the Quraysh decided their affairs, the keys to the Kaaba, the banner of the war, the right to own the source of Zamzam and the right to collect food for pilgrims [3] .
The sons of Abd Manaf: Abd Shams, Hashim, al-Muttalibi and Naufal felt that they had more rights to what Kusai Abd al-Dar gave and decided to take them from Banu Abd al-Dar [4] [5] . A group of supporters of Banu Abd al-Dar was led by Amir ibn Hashim [6] .
Groups of supporters of the Abd Manaf clan, led by Abd Shams ibn Abd Manaf, entered into an agreement between themselves confirming that they would not give up their position and would not betray each other. People from Banu Abd Manaf brought out a dish filled with incense, laid a dish in front of their allies in a temple near the Kaaba, after which supporters of Banu Abd Manaf put their hands in the dish and touched the Kaaba with their hand, leaving prints in assurance. They began to call them βperfumed incenseβ (al-mutayyabun). People from Banu Abd al-Dara also entered into an alliance with their supporters near the Kaaba and began to call them βalliesβ (al-ahlaf) [6] .
Seeing that the split could go to war, both tribes called for a compromise. Ban Abd Manaf was given the right to source Zamzam and collect livestock for cooking pilgrims, and the keys to the Kaaba, the battle flag and the council house remained with the clan Abd al-Dara [7] . Each side was satisfied and people stopped preparing for war [6] .
Family
Abd Manaf had several wives from influential tribes, including Atik binth Murra from the Hawazin clan, Wright from Taif and Wakid bin Amr. Wright had one son, whose name was Abd or Abd al-Amr, who died childless. Wakida also had one son, whose name was Naufal. Atika gave birth to five sons and six daughters. The sons of Atik were called Amr ( Hashim ibn Abd Manaf ), Abd Shams, Muttalib, Hala and Barra [8] . Muttalib was younger than Hashim and became his successor. The daughters of Atik were called: Tumadir (Tamadur), Kilaba, Haya, Wright (Rita), Umm Ahsam and Umm Sufyan [9] .
