The object, originally designated 2003 UZ 117 , was discovered on October 24, 2003 by a group of astronomers of the Spacewatch project (composed of A. E. Gleason, J. A. Larsen, R. C. Macmillan), who conducted observations at the Kitt Peak Astronomical Observatory ", Located in the desert of Sonora ( Arizona , USA ). The discovery was presented on November 2, 2003.

According to independent studies on the observation of common infrared absorption structures in water ice and the grouping of their orbital elements, it was possible to detect Kuiper belt objects, which are likely to be objects resulting from the collision of the dwarf planet Haumea , due to which the planet lost a significant part of the ice mantle and increased its rotation [3] . These are eight Kuiper belt objects - (24835) 1995 SM 55 , (19308) 1996 TO 66 , (86047) 1999 OY 3 , (55636) 2002 TX 300 , (1200178) 2003 OP 32 , 2003 UZ 117 , 2005 CB 79 , ( 145453) 2005 RR 43 - having identical orbits with a major semiaxis of 43 AU, an eccentricity of 0.14, an inclination of 28 ° and an average movement of 0.0034 degrees / day. All of them are supposedly composed of water ice.

Zakom + in this color drawing of trans-Neptune objects marked object 2005 RR 43 (BV = 0.77, VR = 0.41). All other members of the Haumea family (CB 79 : 0.73, 0.37) are located below and to the left of this point.
