Le Muy ( fr. Le Muy , ox. Lo Muei ) is a commune in southeastern France in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region , Var department , Draguignan district , Vidoban canton [1] .

Content

History

The town of Le Muy, under the Latinized name Modius, first appears in written sources under 1178, which indicates that it has been a linen of the Marseille Abbey of Saint-Victor since the 11th century, and then of the Counts of Provence. In the XIII and XIV centuries, part of it belonged to the noble families of Balb de Saint-Alban and Pontev . In 1430, Le Muy became the property of the name Rasca , creating his own marquise here.

In 1536, during the invasion of imperial and Spanish troops, the inhabitants of Le Muy showed strangers resistance. An attempt was made on Emperor Charles V , but the famous Spanish poet Garcilaso de la Vega was killed by mistake. Despite the emperor’s promise to save the lives of the conspirators, if they themselves surrender to him, the locals who showed confidence in the Kaiser's word were seized and hanged. In honor of this event, two commemorative signs were erected in Le Muy, one about Gersilaso de la Vega, the other about the heroism of the rebels.

During the Second World War, Le Muy was occupied by Nazi forces. Released on August 15, 1944 during Operation Dragon, a discarded airborne squad.

Economics

The basis of the economy of the commune is the tourism business , viticulture and winemaking ( Chateau du Rouët and others), gardening .

In 2010, out of 5,483 people of working age (from 15 to 64 years old), 3,791 were economically active , 1,692 inactive (activity indicator 69.1%, in 1999 - 65.7%). Of the 3,791 active working people, 3,099 people worked (1,715 men and 1,384 women), 692 were unemployed (330 men and 362 women). Among 1692 able-bodied inactive citizens, 379 were pupils or students , 583 were pensioners , and another 730 were inactive for other reasons [7] [8] .

Throughout 2010, there were 3832 taxable households in the commune, in which 9334.5 people lived. In this case, the median income was 16,475 euros per taxpayer [9] .
