Biography

Medvedev was a worker at the Sysert plant . During the First World War, he went to war to the front and rose to the rank of non-commissioned officer in the tsarist army. In 1917 he became a member of the RSDLP and participated in the suppression of the anti-Soviet uprising of ataman Dutov [2] .

The execution of the royal family

Medvedev headed the external security of the Special Purpose House from the moment the imperial family arrived in Yekaterinburg on April 30, 1918, and until they were executed [3] . It was he who informed the local KGB about the drunkenness and theft of the internal guard that reigned during the first commandant of the house, locksmith Alexander Avdeev. After that, Avdeev was ousted and replaced by a Chekist, Yakovsky Yurovsky , who established tough orders in the protection of the house.

On the night of July 17, 1918, Medvedev, along with Yurovsky and several other KGB and Red Army soldiers, was a direct participant in the execution of the tsar’s family. After the execution, when Yurovsky and Ermakov left to bury the corpses on Ganina Yama , Medvedev arranged for the Ipatiev’s house to be hidden to cover up the traces of the group execution.

Further fate

After the whites took Yekaterinburg, eight days after the execution of the royal family, Medvedev with the remnants of the Red Army units retreated to Perm and in the winter of 1918 participated in the defense of the city . By order of the command, he was supposed to blow up a bridge over the Kama River when retreating, but did not have time and was captured by the white [2] .

In captivity, he hid his identity, named himself Bobylev, was soon released and worked as a nurse in the hospital. Once he confessed to the sister of mercy that he served in the protection of Ipatiev’s house . My sister reported this and on February 11, 1919, Medvedev was arrested in Perm by the criminal investigator S. I. Alekseev [4] [5] .

Medvedev was interrogated by White Guard investigators investigating the killing of the imperial family. During interrogations, he denied his personal involvement in the execution [6] , claiming that during the murder he was sent to the street to find out if shots were heard from outside.

The investigation did not come to an unambiguous conclusion about the degree of his guilt. He was supposed to be interrogated by the investigator Sokolov , who had recently led the investigation, but on March 12, 1919, Medvedev died of typhus in the Yekaterinburg prison [1] [7] .
