Ukrainian magazine

“Ukrainian Journal” is a literary, artistic, scientific and socio-political two-weekly published by Kharkov University .

Issued in 1824-1825 in Kharkov as a kind of continuation of the "Ukrainian Herald" (from 1816); Editor Alexander Sklabovsky. 48 numbers came out; circulation of 600 copies. The “Ukrainian Journal” contained, among other things, materials from Ukrainian history (about Bogdan and Yuri Khmelnitsky, Ivan Skoropadsky), ethnographic descriptions, descriptions of Ukrainian cities (I. Vernet, A. Levshin), articles on the Ukrainian language and folk art and their significance for development Ukrainian literature. Ivan Kulzhinsky in his article “Some remarks on the history and nature of Little Russian poetry” gave the first attempt to analyze Ukrainian poetry with an examination of folk art and written literature from G. Skovoroda to I. Kotlyarevsky. Pavel Beletsky-Nosenko emphasized the need to publish periodicals in Ukrainian. The Ukrainian Journal informed about the state of education, cultural events, literary news and about public life, in particular in Slobozhanshchina.
