Umurdinov showed courage and heroism in the Oryol offensive operation . In a battle in the vicinity of the village of Pleshcheyevo ( Orel Region ), on the outskirts of Orel on August 4, 1943, he was the first to raise his platoon to attack. In hand-to-hand combat, a platoon destroyed 20 Nazis. After a short-term hand-to-hand combat, the enemy, leaving trenches, fled.
On August 14, Umurdinov’s fighters were tasked with drawing close to the enemy, defending an important strategic height in the area of the village of Krivoshein , and reconnaissing his fire system with battle. Fifteen seasoned warriors crawled toward height. The enemy, distracted by a shootout that was intentionally started with him, did not notice Umurdinov’s group, and Mukhitdin immediately took advantage of it: instant throw, explosions of grenades, friendly firing from machine guns, the formidable “Hurray!” And the enemy, unable to withstand the onslaught, fled. And at a height of about a hundred Nazis.
The title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal to Mukhitdin Umurdinov was awarded by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR of June 4, 1944.
In January 1944, he was seriously injured in battle, and after lengthy treatment in hospitals in 1945, he was demobilized due to disability. For two years of participation in the war, he had more than 200 destroyed Nazis on his personal combat account and captured 6 more.

In May 1997, during the flood, the Golden Star of the Hero was abducted from the Umurdinov’s house. The medal and the award sheet were smuggled out of Uzbekistan and ended up in Germany. Then the medal was bought by the American writer Henry Sakaida. He sent a letter to the Umurdinov family asking him to tell something about Mukhitdin and mentioned in the letter that the hero’s medal was with him. In response, the son of Mukhitdin, Rakhmatjon Umurdinov, suggested that Sakaida redeem the medal of his father. The American writer did not consider it possible to receive money for a thing that did not belong to him by right, and returned the Hero's medal for free.
