Biography
Francesco Paolo Frontini was born on August 6, 1860 in Catania, in the kingdom of Both Sicilies, in the family of musician Martino Frontini and Angela Senia. He received his primary musical education from his father. He studied violin under Santi D'Amico . He gave his first concert at the city hall at the age of 13. At age 15, his first work, “Qui tollis for tenor and orchestra,” was performed in the cathedral of Catania on the day of St. Cecilia. The orchestra was conducted by the teacher of the young musician Pietro Antonio Coppola . In 1875, he was admitted to the Royal Conservatory in Palermo , where he studied with Pietro Platania , from where he transferred to the Conservatory of San Pietro a Mayella in Naples . Here, under the leadership of Lauro Rossi received a degree in musical composition.
One of the outstanding early works of Francesco Paolo Frontini is the Requiem ( Italian: Grande messa da requiem ), written by him on the death of his teacher, Pietro Antonio Coppola in 1876. Other early works of the composer were the “String Concerto in C Minor” ( Italian: Quartetto per archi in do minore ) of 1879, the overture of “Spartacus” ( Italian: Spartaco ) of 1880. March 30, 1881 the premiere of his first opera Nella ( Italian. Nella ) followed, followed in 1882 by the oratorio Samson and Delilah ( Italian. Sansone e Dalila ), in 1883 the opera Aleramo ( Italian. Aleramo ) , in 1889, the operas Don Bucefalo ( Italian: Don Bucefalo ) and Convict ( Italian: Il galeotto ), in 1893 the opera Malia ( Italian: Malìa ) on the libretto by Luigi Capuan, in 1899 the opera Sokolnichy ( Italian: Il Falconiere ) and in 1900 the opera "Rock" ( Italian. Fatalità ).
From 1883 until his death, the composer was involved in collecting and editing anthologies of Sicilian folk songs, the first of which was published in 1883 in Milan under the title Echo of Sicily ( Italian: Eco di Sicilia ). He was also engaged in musical pedagogical activities, taught counterpoint. Until 1923, he headed the music school in Catania. After he was appointed honorary director of this educational institution.
Francesco Paolo Frontini died in Catania on July 26, 1939.
