Biography
On October 15, 1839, Lajos Heinald was ordained priest , after which he studied theology in Esztergom, Vienna and Trnava. In 1841, he completed his theological education, receiving the degree of Doctor of Theology. From 1842 to 1846, Lajos Heinald taught theology in Esztergom and was engaged in scientific research in the field of botany. In 1846 he became secretary to the prince primac Kopachi, who sent him to Paris the same year to study canon law. In 1848, Lajos Heinald returned to his homeland, where he became chancellor of the prince-primate Kovaci. In 1849, Layosh Heinald refused to sign the Declaration of Independence of Hungary, for which he was deprived of his position.
On March 15, 1852, Pope Pius IX appointed Lajos Hanald as the auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Transylvania, Erdelyi and Siebenburger and the titular bishop of Hebron . On August 15, 1852, Layosh Heinald was ordained as a bishop by the Archbishop of Esztergom Janosh Schitovsky .
On October 15, 1852, Pope Pius IX appointed Layosh Heinald as Bishop of Transylvania, Erdelyi, and Siebenbürgen. September 12, 1864 Layosh Heinald resigned and on the same day he was appointed titular archbishop of Carthage . Until 1867, he lived in Rome , where he worked in the Sacred Congregation for emergency church affairs . On April 5, 1867, Pope Pius IX appointed Layosh Heinald as Archbishop of Kaloc.
In 1870, he participated in the work of the First Vatican Council , where, together with Archbishop Diakovar Josip Strosmayer , he was one of the main opponents of adopting the dogma of papal infallibility . Despite this position, Layosh Hajnal adopted the decrees of the First Vatican Council.
On May 12, 1879, Pope Leo XIII elected Layosh Heinald as cardinal priest with the title of Santa Maria degli Angeli .
He died July 4, 1891 in the city of Kalochi.
Scientific Activities
Layosh Heinald practiced botany. His herbarium and botanical library were one of the largest botanical collections in Europe. This collection was later transferred to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . In 1867 he became a member of the German Academy of Naturalists Leopoldina .
