Biography
He began his career as a bricklayer, then worked as an assistant to the architect Alayosha Hausmann . After completing his studies in Berlin, he returned to Budapest , where he worked with Alayos Hausmann and Imre Steindl . Since 1890, working independently, his projects are distinguished by a large number of elements of historicism and eclecticism . The project of the Vajdahunyad castle, built in eclectic style in Budapest, first of all from wood and then rebuilt in stone, brought him wide fame. In front of the castle, a monument to Ignaz Alpar by Ede Telc is currently erected.
He died while on holiday in Zurich in 1928, and was buried in the Kurepesi cemetery.
In addition to the Vajdahunyad castle, among the best works of Alpar are the buildings of the radio and television company (the former Old Stock Exchange) and the National Bank on the Budapest Liberty Square and the buildings of the town halls in several cities of the former Austria-Hungary .
