Grigor Marashetsi

Grigor Marashetsi ( armenian Գրիգոր Մարաշեցի ) is an Armenian poet of the 12th century.

He lived and worked in the monastery of Gesvanets, not far from Marash [1] . He was a prominent representative of the Cilician literary school. The most famous work is “Crying” ( 1149 , Armenian “Ողբ” or “Վայ գիրք” ). This work was dedicated to the capture of Marash by Sultan Masoud in 1149 [2] . Five more poems by Grigor Marashetsi survived - “Prayer” ( Armenian “Աղօթքը” ), “Collection of penances” ( Armenian “Մեղաների շարք” ), as well as three panegyrics dedicated to the Virgin [3] . In his poems, Grigor often describes urban life, talks about equestrian competitions widespread among Armenians, circus and theater art [4] [5] . Criticizes magicians and animal trainers , considering their activities a sin [4] [5] . In his work, the strongest influence of Grigor Narekatsi is felt [2] [3] [5] .
Marashetsi was also an influential church figure. In his sermons, he addressed the abbots of monasteries and called for greater justice in relation to his disciples and parishioners [6] .
