Play career
Savard was born on January 29, 1946 in Montreal , where he played hockey from an early age. Speaking for the school team, a promising 15-year-old adolescent falls into the note of the Canadiens scouts, and after a couple of seasons spent at the Montreal Junior Canadiens, Savard becomes team captain. In 1966, he signed a contract with the Canadiens and sent to the Houston Apollos club of the Central Hockey League, where Savar was named the best rookie of the year by the end of the season. And in 1967 he was already firmly entrenched in the main team of Montreal. In the 1968–69 season , Savard leads Montreal to a second consecutive victory in the Stanley Cup and becomes the first defender to win the Conn Smyth Trophy as the most valuable playoff player. And this is only the second full season in the NHL ! Savar's interests were not limited to hockey. He actively participated in political activities, for which he received the nickname "Senator".
After Larry Robinson came to the Canadiens, the legendary Big Three defenders formed in the club: Serge Savard, Guy Lapwent and Larry Robinson. Largely due to the crushing power of the Big Trinity, Montreal interrupted the hegemony of the tough Philadelphia and ushered in its 4-year era of domination.
By 1981, having won 8 Stanley Cups, Conn Smythe Trophy and Bill Masterton Trophy with Canadiens, Savard decided to leave the big sport. But the Winnipeg Jets offered him a contract, and he played two more seasons before ending his playing career.
International Career
In 1972, Serge Savard as part of the Canadian national team took part in the Super Series 72 against the USSR national team. He missed the first game in the Montreal Forum, where the Canadian team suffered a crushing defeat of 7: 3. The second and third game Savar was in the composition and the Canadians won one game, and in the second played a draw. The next two games that Canada lost, he missed due to injury. After Savar returned to service for the sixth game, the Canadian team won 3 games in a row, thus winning in the entire series.
Serge Savard took part in the 1976 Canada Cup victory for Canada.
Savard participated in the 1979 Challenge Cup games between the hockey teams of the Soviet Union and the NHL, held in February 1979 at the Madison Square Garden in New York. The victory in the series was won by the USSR team.
After hockey
After his career ended, Savard was appointed Managing Director of Montreal. As General Director of Canadiens in 1986 , Savard will win another 2 Stanley Cups.
