He won the silver medal of the 1988 Olympics, losing only 8 centimeters to Ulf Timmerman . On January 20, 1989, at competitions in Los Angeles, he set a world indoor record of 22.66 meters, which has not been surpassed so far. In 1990, he set a world record in the open air, showing a score of 23.12 m. Shortly after the record, he passed a doping test at a competition in Sweden, which turned out to be positive. The forbidden drug methyltestosterone was found in his blood. For this, he was suspended from the competition for 27 months. Due to disqualification, he missed the 1992 Olympic Games. He won the 1996 Olympic Games with a score of 21.62 m. In 1998, he was disqualified for life from consuming androstenedione .
