Sunset is often brighter than sunrise, and with brighter reds and oranges. Sunset time varies throughout the year and depends on the geographic latitude, geographic longitude and altitude of the observation point. In the northern hemisphere north of the northern tropic, the place of sunset from the day of the vernal equinox to the day of the autumnal equinox (ie, from March to September) is the northwest quadrant, and the southwest quadrant in the rest of the year. In the southern hemisphere south of the southern tropic, the place of sunset from the day of the vernal equinox to the day of the autumnal equinox (ie, from September to March) is the southwest quadrant, and the rest of the year is the northwest quadrant. On the day of the equinox, sunset occurs almost exactly in the west for observers at all points of the Earth’s surface other than the poles.
