The early years

Janos Corvin was born in Buda and received his surname by raven on his father’s heraldic shield (lat: raven - corvus). Initially, Matthias assumed that his son would become a priest. But when his hopes for legitimate children from his wife Beatrice of Aragon did not materialize, he decided to appoint the young Janos as the heir. He gave him titles and money, making him the richest nobleman in the state. The king officially declared Janos as his successor, granted him the title of prince and extensive possessions in Silesia ( Glogow principality ). Matthias also swore allegiance to Janos commandants of all the fortresses of the kingdom and even tried to arrange a marriage for him with Bianca Maria Sforza , but this could not be done due to opposition from Queen Beatrice. Matthias planned to arrange recognition of the Prince by Janos by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III in exchange for the abandonment of all or part of the conquered hereditary possessions of the Habsburg house . However, the sudden death of the emperor left this question unresolved, and the young prince was alone surrounded by enemies.

After the death of Matthias

After the death of the father, the inexperienced and indecisive prince was quickly imposed [ who? ] their conditions. At first he was forced to abandon claims to the throne, as compensation they gave him [ who? ] the crown of Bosnia . He was forced [ who? ] abandon all southern territories that Matthias entrusted to him. His troops in these territories were dispersed very quickly.

On July 15, 1490, Ulaslo , son of the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania Casimir IV , was elected king, to whom Janos immediately swore an oath to preserve some of his possessions. In return, he was recognized by the prince as Slavonic and Opavian, but was forced to renounce both titles after five years. During the conquest of Hungary by Maximilian, he showed respect to the king, transferring to his administration three important fortresses: Pressburg (now Bratislava ), Komaron and Tata , which were transferred to him by his father. But having found the support of the highest dignitaries, including Palatine Istvan Zapolyai , he put forward claims to almost all the estates that he had previously.

Marriage

In 1496, Janos Corwin married Beatrice, daughter of Bernard Francopan . In this regard, his position was strengthened. In 1498, he was appointed an indefinite ban of Croatia and Slavonia . From 1499 to 1502, he successfully defended Bosnia from Turkish attacks. Janos Corvin tried to achieve the title of Palatine , but supporters of Queen Beatrice did not allow this. He died in Krapin on October 12, 1504, leaving two children: the son of Christoph Corvin (d. March 17, 1505) and the daughter Elizabeth (d. 1508).
