Biography

The eldest son of the headmaster, Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Golitsyn (1772-1821), from his marriage to the beloved maid of honor of the Empress, Princess Natalia Fedorovna Shakhovskaya (1779-1807). Great-grandson of Admiral-General M.M. Golitsyn and Baron A.G. Stroganov . The godson of Empress Elizabeth Alekseevna. He received his initial education in Paris , where he lived with his father and brother Fedor .

In 1821, after the death of his father, he returned to Russia with his brother under the guardianship of Prince S. M. Golitsyn ’s uncle. He entered the diplomatic service, in 1822 he was enrolled in the College of Foreign Affairs as an actuary. Since 1823 he served in the Moscow Archives of the College . Since January 1824 he was at the Russian diplomatic mission in Florence .

In December 1831 he was bestowed on junkers . In February 1836, Golitsyn was transferred to Rome , in October he was dismissed due to poor health. During his service in Italy, he began to collect a collection of books, paintings and all kinds of rarities that became the basis of the future museum. At the same time, he secretly converted from Orthodoxy to Catholicism. A. I. Turgenev spoke of Golitsyn as a person “intelligent, amiable and enlightened” [1] .

Poor knowledge of the Russian language, Golitsyn was interested in Russian literature. A.O. Smirnova-Rosset recalled how in 1844 Golitsyn entered her living room at the moment when N. Gogol was reading his “Marriage” there, asked for permission to stay, and then warmly thanked the hostess for a pleasant evening and said that he read Dead Souls with enthusiasm and was glad that he had finally seen their author [2] .

In the last years of his life, Prince M. A. Golitsyn returned to service. In 1854, he was elected honorary trustee of the St. Petersburg gymnasium by the nobility. In October 1855, he was granted the title of “Master of Ceremonies”, in 1856 - the rank of Master of Ceremonies , in 1857 - the rank of State Counselor and the rank of Chamberlain . After the death of Prince S.M. Golitsyn, according to his will, from August 1859 he was the honorary chief director of the Moscow Golitsyn hospital , and also inherited his famous Moscow Region, such as Kuzminki and Dubrovitsy . Since December 8, 1856, he served as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary minister in the city of Madrid [3] .

At the end of 1859, Prince Golitsyn fell ill. A worried wife took him to Montpellier for treatment, where he died in March 1860. Golitsyn’s body was transported to Italy and buried in the cemetery of the Cartesian monastery in Bologna near the grave of his brother. V. A. Mukhanov wrote in his diary [4] :

The news came that on the eve of Prince Golitsyn died. They believed that he was seriously ill; disturbing news was received, but did not believe that the end was so near. Enlightened mind, kind heart, great courtesy, ancient courtesy reported great charm for relations with Prince Golitsyn. Everyone liked his stories, and in particular loved to hear him talk about Spain. The prince had noble tastes; he loved paintings, statues, antique furniture, but his passion for old books was a particular passion.

After himself, Prince Golitsyn left a posthumous letter to the emperor, in which he apologized for the fact that, being in the service, he hid the conversion to Catholicism . For an open confession of Catholicism, he would be fired from service, and his vast estate could go into custody [5] .

Family

Maria Ilyinichna, wife

On August 23, 1842, Prince M. A. Golitsyn married Princess Maria Ilyinichna Dolgorukova (1825-1907), daughter of Lieutenant General Ilya Andreevich Dolgorukov (1797-1848) and Princess Ekaterina Alexandrovna Saltykova-Golovkina (1803-1852). On the occasion of their marriage, V. A. Mukhanov wrote on July 19, 1842 in his diary [6] :

This is a wonderful union. On the one hand, beauty, on the other, wealth, and on both sides noble names. This marriage is especially pleasant for the bride, whose mother is seriously ill. To remain an orphan at the very entry into the world, having no patronage in society and to resort to others for help to travel to the world, where a brilliant crowd, is what is considered a misfortune for a young girl. The good prince Sergey Golitsyn should be delighted with this marriage, he insists very much that their family does not stop.

Widowed, Maria Ilyinichna in 1862 married Count N. D. Osten-Saxen (1831-1912). From Golitsyn, she had an only son:

  • Sergei Mikhailovich (1843–1915), current state adviser, honorary trustee and chief director of the Golitsyn hospital. After the death of his father, he inherited the collection and library, in January 1865 he opened the Golitsyn Museum in his house on Volkhonka 14 . Due to financial difficulties, in 1886 he sold the museum’s collection to the Hermitage and the Public Library.
