Description

One of Budapest’s largest squares stretches north-south and is surrounded by luxurious mansions. In architectural terms, the buildings of the Hungarian Radio and Television Company, the US Embassy and the National Bank stand out among them. The buildings of the radio television company (the former old Exchange) and the National Bank are located on opposite sides of the square. They were designed by the famous Hungarian architect and sculptor Ignaz Alpar during the reconstruction of the square in 1905. The building of the US Embassy was built in 1901, its facade is decorated in the style of Secession .

The central part of the square is a square with fountains; a monument to the soldiers of the Soviet Army who fell during the liberation of Budapest from fascism was erected here.

History

The area was formed in 1886 after the demolition of the giant complex of barriers Neugeboid, occupying a significant part of Lipotvaros. In the 19th century, the Austrian authorities used the barracks as a prison; it was here that Count Lajos Battiani , a participant in the Hungarian uprising of 1848, was executed. Since 1926, an eternal flame has been lit on the corner of Bathory and Hold streets in memory of the victims of the Hungarian revolution.
