Nass operation

Chest x-ray of the patient after Nass surgery

Nass operation (Donald Nass ( eng. Dr. Donald Nuss ), an American pediatric surgeon) is a minimally invasive operation developed in 1987 [1] by Dr. Donald Nass and is used to correct funnel chest deformities ( lat. Pectus excavatum ).

Content

Donald Nass

A native of South Africa , who later became an American pediatric surgeon, a professor at the East Virginia School of Medicine. In 1987, he developed a minimally invasive technology for correcting funnel chest deformities at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters , Norfolk , Virginia , USA . In 1998, Donald Nass presented the results of a 10-year practice of correction of VDGK using minimally invasive technology (later named after him). [2]

Method Description

During the operation, two small side incisions are made on both sides of the chest. An introducer is introduced through the opening, which is carried out first into the subcutaneous space, under the muscles, inside the chest and behind the sternum, then is carried out in front of the pericardium in the direction of the opposite skin incision. The process can be controlled using a thoracoscope. The tape is fixed to the introducer sheath and the introducer sheath is removed. A special titanium or steel plate (usually it is inserted from the right half of the chest) is carried along the tape along the formed channel. When the plate is inserted and correctly placed, it is rotated. The final stage of the operation - fixing and stabilization of the plate - this is done in several ways - by stitching to the ribs and muscles, installing special fixators (in the Park) or using stabilizers (classically according to Nass or Plegard).

In the postoperative period, anesthesia is carried out by means of epidural anesthesia (on average from 3 to 5 days), narcotic analgesics (up to 3 days after surgery), non-narcotic analgesics are used for 7 days.

Possible complications

Early and late complications are described. Among the early ones: hemothorax , pneumothorax , hydrothorax , plate displacement. The latter include: hypercorrection and plate rejection.
