Small Magellanic Cloud ( IMO , SMC , NGC 292) is a dwarf galaxy , a satellite of the Milky Way . Located at a distance of about 60 kilos parsecs in the constellation of Toucan and looks like a dimly glowing cloud about 3 ° in size. Contains 1.5 billion stars. The Small Magellanic Cloud and the Large Magellanic Cloud are surrounded by a common shell of neutral hydrogen , which is called the Magellanic System.

The Small Magellanic Cloud is named after the Portuguese explorer Fernand Magellan , who observed this galaxy in 1519 during a trip around the world.
In Russia , as in almost the entire Northern Hemisphere , the Small Magellanic Cloud is not observed.
According to data published in September 2014, according to one of the models, after 4 billion years, the Milky Way will “swallow” the Big and Small Magellanic Clouds, and after 5 billion years it will itself be absorbed by the Andromeda Nebula [2] .
In the Small Magellanic Cloud there is a runaway superfast star belonging to the type of yellow supergiants J01020100-7122208 [3] [4] .

Fiction
In the novels of Edmond Hamilton “ Star Kings ” (1949) and “ Return to the Stars ” (1970), the extremely aggressive race of super-telepaths Kh'harn, inhabitants of the Small Magellanic Cloud (in the local dialect - Amambaran), who twice made an attempt to military capture of our Galaxy, is mentioned but were stopped by the use of superweapons of earthlings, capable of destroying space itself. The series of novels by Sergey Sukhinov “The Star Wolf” ( 1998 - 2006 ), written based on the works of Hamilton, describes the continuation of the history of the confrontation between the inhabitants of our Galaxy and the H'harn (Third Force), although Hamilton has “Star Kings” and the cycle “Star Wolf” were not connected in any way.
In all of Kurt Vonnegut's science fiction novels, even if the events take place on Earth and are not related to outer space , the planet Tralfamador, located in the Lesser Magellanic Cloud, must be mentioned. The idea that all the events taking place on Earth, one way or another, depends on the will of the people of Tralfamador, runs like a thread through all of Vonnegut's fiction. Stanislav Lem in his novel “The Magellanic Cloud” mentions this galaxy.
