The institute consists of a small group of permanent employees, a large number of employees permanently working in other institutes, and visiting researchers. The institute is advised by eminent scientists, including several Nobel laureates. Also conducts educational work on integrated systems among students.

Financing of the Institute includes donations, grants, government subsidies and investments of commercial structures. The budget for 2011 was just over $ 10 million. [1]

Content

History

The Santa Fe Institute was organized in 1984 by a group of scientists including George Cowan , David Pines , Stirling Colgate , Murray Gell-Man , Nicholas Constantin Metropolis , Herb Andersen, Peter Carruthers and Richard Slansky , most of whom, with the exception of David Pines and Gell -Mana were employees of the Los Alamos National Laboratory . Their main goal was to create a special organization for interdisciplinary research. [2] [3]

Research

The research field of the Institute focuses on complex adaptive systems and simply on complex systems . Studies include the study of processes leading to the emergence of early life forms, evolutionary modeling, the study of metabolic and environmental laws of similarity, the fundamental properties of cities, evolutionary diversification of viral strains, interaction and conflicts of primate social groups, history of languages, interaction of species, including food chains, the dynamics of financial markets, the emergence of hierarchy and cooperation in early human populations, biological and technological innovations.
