Biography
Belonged to the noble family Zherebtsovy , who were descendants of the famous family of the Chernigov boyars Byakontov . Born in Rzhev .
Under Boris Godunov, Davyd Zherebtsov made a good military career, and under Vasily Shuysky , who tried to avoid those close to Godunov, he was appointed governor to remote Mangazeya . In this city, under the Zherebtsov Kremlin was built and the Trinity Church. Zherebtsov was the founder of the Turukhansk winter quarters (now Staroturukhansk ).
Remaining loyal to the oath, in the summer of 1608, he delivered a detachment of Siberian archers to the European part of Russia to fight the “Tushino thief” of False Dmitry II . Having completed an unprecedented transition from the Turukhansk region , 1200 soldiers of Zherebtsov joined the six hundred Arkhangelsk archers along the way, suddenly appeared at Kostroma, defeated Alexander Lisovsky and freed this town together with the Ipatiev Monastery . After that, Zherebtsov went to join up with Prince Mikhail Skopin-Shuisky , who was forming an army in Kalyazin . The detachment led by Zherebtsov significantly strengthened the Skopin-Shuisky army and subsequently constituted one of its most combat-ready units.
Stallions and his warriors distinguished themselves in the Battle of Kalyazin on August 28, 1609. Zherebtsov Streltsy participated in the prosecution of the retreating regiments of hetman Jan Sapegi and Tushino colonels Zborovsky and Lisovsky, freeing Pereslavl-Zalessky with a sudden attack. In October of the same year, Zherebtsov participated in the capture of Aleksandrovskaya settlement and its subsequent defense from the Sapieha units . Later, at the head of his squadron, together with the detachments of Semen Golovin and Grigory Valuev, attacked the siege army of Sapega under the Trinity-Sergius Monastery , inflicting significant losses on it. Thanks to skillful reconnaissance at the head of 600 archers and 300 militias, he managed to make a breakthrough through the siege ring and penetrate the monastery, strengthening his garrison and taking on further command. Impressed by these events and fearing the approach of the main forces of Skopin-Shuisky, Sapega after some time decided to lift the siege and retreat to Dmitrov . In February 1610, the Zherebtsov archers proved themselves in the Battle of Dmitrov , in which the Sapieha troops were defeated.
After arriving in unlocked Moscow as part of the troops of Skopin-Shuisky, the voivode Zherebtsov was generously rewarded by Vasily Shuisky for his numerous exploits. Since Lisovsky’s detachment remained in the rear, in Suzdal, from which one should have expected an attempt to break through to the west, Zherebtsov was entrusted with the mission to organize the defense of Kalyazin, where considerable stocks of weapons and ammunition remained. Soon after the arrival of Zherebtsov, on May 2, 1610, the “ foolmen ” suddenly attacked the Trinity Makaryev Monastery and, despite the desperate resistance of the garrison, seized it. All the defenders, including Zherebtsov, were killed, and the monastery itself was plundered.
The memory of Davyd Zherebtsov until the beginning of the XX century was honored in the cities liberated by him. His name is included in the synodics of the Kostroma Epiphany Monastery and the Trinity Makaryev Monastery.
