The son of Jean II de Chalon-Arles , Senor d'Arle and de Vitto , and Margarita de Mello.
He married Blanca of Geneva, lady de Frontenne, daughter of Count Amedea III of Geneva and Matilda of Boulogne. This required a special papal permission (July 2, 1363), since the bride was the sister of his father’s second wife.
Hugo was a knight of the Order of the Annunziata , established by his relative, Green Earl Amadeus VI of Savoy .
He died childless. Senoria Arles was inherited by his nephew Jean III de Chalon-Arles , Prince of Orange.
