The son of Count Christian V of Oldenburg and Countess Agnes Gonstein.
Inherited older brother Christian VI. He received the nickname Happy (Lucky) due to the fact that in 1436 he secured Delmenhorst County for his clan.

The first marriage, since childhood (1401), was married to Adelheide von Oldenburg-Delmenhorst (d. 1423 ), daughter of Count Otton IV.
The second marriage (prenuptial contract of November 23, 1423) - with Heilwig Holstein (1398/1400 - 1436 ), daughter of Count Gerhard VI of Holstein-Rendsburg .
Children (from the second wife):
- Adelheida (1425-1475), first married to Ernst III, Earl of Gonstein-Klettenberg (d. 1454); the second (before 1457) - behind Gebhard VI Mansfeldsky (d. 1492).
- Christians I (1426-1481), king of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, duke of Schleswig and Holstein.
- Moritz IV (1428-1464), Count of Delmenhorst.
- Gerhard VI (1430-1500), Earl of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst.
