History
The territory of French Lorraine was occupied by German troops on June 22, 1940 as a result of the French campaign and was initially under military control. By special decree of the Fuhrer on August 2, 1940, the territory of the Moselle department , which belonged to Germany in 1871-1918, was transferred under the control of the German civil administration . Later it was planned to include this region in the Third Reich and the formation of the new Reichsgau West Mark , which also included Saar and Palatinate . However, until the end of the war, this plan was never implemented.
In December 1944, Lorraine was occupied by American troops, and after the war she returned to France again.
