Tarasa ( Spanish: Tarazá ) is a city and municipality in northern Colombia , in the Antioquia department. It is part of the Baio Cauca subregion .

Content
History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on February 24, 1953 . The municipality of Taras was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1979 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the north of the department, on the eponymous left tributary of the Cauca River , at a distance of approximately 143 kilometers northeast (NNE) from Medellin , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 138 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of Taras borders in the west and southwest with the municipality of Ituango , in the south with the municipality of Valdivia , in the southeast with the municipality of Anori , in the east with the municipality of Cáceres , in the north with the territory of the Department of Córdoba . The area of the municipality is 1569 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2012 was 39,257 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men accounted for 50% of the population of Taras, women - respectively, also 50%. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 90.9% of the city’s population; blacks , mulattoes and Raisals - 8.8%, Indians - 0.3% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 72.3%.
Economics
The basis of the economy of Taras is agricultural production , gold mining and fishing . On the territory of the municipality, bananas , cocoa , hevea , cassava and rice are cultivated.
58.1% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 38.2% are service enterprises, 2.6% are industrial enterprises, 1.1% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
