Biography

Felicia was the eldest daughter of the Count of Sicily Roger I and his second wife Eremburga de Morten . By tradition, her name was Busilla, but this name probably comes from the misunderstood ancient Italian word "Pucelle", which means "virgin".

In 1096, the king of Hungary, Kalman I the Scribe, sent his ambassadors to her father’s court to propose that Filius be married to him, but the count of Sicily did not consider the embassy to be high enough and refused this offer. The second embassy of the King of Hungary was sent, led by Bishop Hartwick, but the Count insisted on further negotiations. Finally, the ambassadors, led by Prince Almos , the king’s younger brother, succeeded and returned to Hungary, escorting the Felicia, where, around 1097, she married King Kalman.

Some Sicilian courtiers arrived in Hungary together with the Filiziya: for example, the ancestors of the future Hungarian clan Ratot (Oliver and Ratot) were accompanied by her.

When Felicia died, her remains were buried in the basilica of Szekesfehervar . Shortly after her death, in 1112, the king married a second time, to Euphemia , daughter of the Grand Duke of Kiev Vladimir Monomakh .

Marriage and children

Since 1097, Felicia was the wife of the King of Hungary Kalman I (c. 1070 - February 3, 1116). In this marriage were born:

  • Sofia (formerly 1101 -?), Wife of a Hungarian nobleman
  • King of Hungary Istvan II (1101 - March 1, 1131)
  • Laszlo (1101 -?)
