History

The museum is open to visitors on April 7, 1939. The collection was based on paintings and drawings from the North Ossetian Museum of Local Lore and the State Museum Fund of the USSR.

In 1946, the museum’s collection almost completely included the collection of artist-restorer V.V. Safronov (Russian painting, graphic art of the 19th - early 20th centuries).

In 1971, the museum was named after a major Ossetian painter and graphic artist, student of Ilya Repin, folk artist Maharbek Safarovich Tuganov .

In 1981, the museum’s funds were replenished with paintings and drawings of Russian artists of the XIX century, donated by Moscow collector G. M. Golkovsky [1] .
