Creation History
The Model 89 self-propelled gun was developed by order of the Romanian armed forces in the 1980s for the specifics of using Soviet military equipment in the Romanian army. Serial production of self-propelled guns started in 1989 . The fighting compartment was made in Bulgaria . In addition to Romania, Model 89 self-propelled guns were not delivered anywhere else. In total, over 42 years of production, 42 machines were manufactured [1] .
Design Description
Armored Corps and Tower
ACS Model 89 is a modification of the 122-mm self-propelled howitzer 2C1 "Carnation" . The 2C1 fighting compartment is mounted on the chassis of a Romanian-made MLI-84 infantry fighting vehicle . The chassis housing is welded from armored rolled steel sheets and provides protection for the crew from bullets and small fragments of shells. The layout of the car is identical to the SAU 2C1 . In the front of the case there is a motor-transmission compartment and a control compartment. In the middle and rear of the hull is the fighting compartment. A rotary hood with a 2A31 gun, fully borrowed from the 2S1 self-propelled guns, is installed in the fighting compartment [1] .
Armament
The main armament of the 2S1 self-propelled guns is the 122-mm 2A31 howitzer . The gun is fully unified in terms of ballistic performance and ammunition used with a 122-mm towed D-30 howitzer . The maximum firing range of a high-explosive fragmentation projectile is 15.3 km, and firing with an active-reactive projectile at a range of up to 21.9 km is additionally possible. Transported ammunition - 40 rounds [1] .
Engine and transmission
Model 89 has a 1240 V8DTS 360- hp V-shaped 8-cylinder diesel engine . [1] .
Chassis
The chassis is a modified chassis of the MLI-84 infantry fighting vehicle , based on the Soviet BMP-1 . The chassis consists of seven pairs of rubberized road wheels and three pairs of supporting wheels . There are guide wheels in the rear of the machine, and drive wheels in the front. Suspension - individual torsion bar . To overcome water barriers by swimming, two water jets were installed in the stern of the hull [1] .
Operators
- Romania - 18 units of Model 89, as of 2012 [2]
