The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on June 3, 1636 . The Necha municipality was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1981 .

The city is located in the north of the department, on the left bank of the Cauca River , near the confluence of the River, about 217 kilometers northeast of Medellin , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 28 meters above sea ​​level ^[1] .
The municipality of Nechi borders on the west and southwest with the municipality of Kaukasia , in the southeast - with the municipality of El Bagre , in the northeast - with the territory of the Bolivar department, in the northwest - with the territory of the department of Cordoba . According to the 2005 census, men accounted for 52.1% of the Nech population, women - 47.9%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 64.1% of the city's population; Negroes and mulattoes - 35.6%, Indians - 0.3% ^[4] . The literacy rate among people over 15 years old was 78.4%.
