Levstick, Fran

Fran Levstik is considered the first classic of Slovenian epic prose. Born into a peasant family. He studied at the gymnasium in Ljubljana, but did not pass the final exams. He entered the theological seminary of the German knightly rite in Olomouc . He returned to his native village, where he performed various tasks. He worked as a private teacher, then became secretary of the reading room, editor of Naprej magazine, secretary of the Slovenske matice in Ljubljana, and editor of the Slovenian-German dictionary. In 1870, he helped organize Zvon to Josip Streetarova, and then completed a larger amount of editorial work on the translation of the Slovenian Code. In 1872, he joined the Ljubljana Library, where he worked until his death. He died at 56 after a long illness.

His name was given to the Ljubljana market and road. Since 1949, in Slovenia, the Levstik Prize has been awarded to the best children's writers.
