Crested bee-eater , eastern bee-eater ( lat. Pernis ptilorhynchus ) is a bird of prey in the family of hawk -like falconidae .

Content

Description

The bird of prey is medium in size, larger than the common beetle .

On the occipital part of the head, elongated feathers form a pointed crest.

The upper body is brown or dark brown, the throat is white with a narrow black stripe below, sometimes brown with a subtle black stripe.

Males are gray in color, the iris is red, 2 wide stripes on the tail.

Females are darker with a brown head, the iris is yellow. Females and young birds have 4 to 6 stripes on the tail, as does the common beetle.

Weight 0.7–1.5 kg, length 59–66 cm, wing of males 40.4–44.5 cm, females 43.7–49.7 cm, wingspan –150–170 cm.

Habitats

Inhabits the south of Siberia and the Far East , reaching the Altai and Salair in the west.

It lives in mixed and deciduous forests with open areas. It feeds on hymenoptera , mainly wasps , and can feed on other insects, such as cicadas [1] .

Flight

When flying, the crested bee-eater hangs at times, making short wings flaps [2] [3] .

Nesting

Nests only in forests. The nest is built of thin branches, lined with leaves and bounded by living branches. Diameter 60-90 cm, height about 20-60 cm, diameter of the tray 40-50 cm, depth 10-15 cm.

In clutch there are 2 eggs of red or light brown color with spots.

Status in the Red Book of Altai Krai - IV category.
