Biography
Born in 1875 (according to other sources, April 1, 1889 ). He came from a noble family, for which he was often called the prince. He served in the Nizhny Novgorod 22nd Infantry Regiment, for military distinctions he was promoted to officer. In 1915, he persuaded his superiors to let him go into aviation; on June 25, he was transferred by an observer to the 17th Corps Squadron. From October 17, 1915 to August 7, 1916 he studied at the military aviation school. June 8 during a training flight crashed, but survived. After graduating from school, he received the title of “military pilot” and was seconded to the 14th Corps air squad.
Kanukov turned out to be a very talented and successful pilot, having earned several military orders, and quickly advanced in service. March 24, 1917 he was appointed commander of the 30th Corps air squad. After the October Revolution he ended up in Ukraine, in the army of which he continued his service. In November 1918, during the formation of the Ukrainian Galician Army, Dzhambulat was enlisted in the 1st "fly" detachment of Boris Huber , leading the 1st hundred. The younger brother Khasbulat served there. The squadron was equipped with aircraft such as “Newpor”, “Albatross”, “Farman”, “Daimler”, participated in the war against Poland.
Dzhambulat was not only an excellent pilot, but also an excellent organizer and instructor, forcing hundreds of pilots to master a variety of techniques. The colonel was able to distinguish the type of aircraft by ear (by the sound of the engine). At the same time he was a man of cheerful disposition, which was very impressive to young aviators. Soon his squad expanded to a regiment. On February 5, 1919, Huber was tragically killed in the explosion of an aerial bomb, which he was holding in his hands: the younger brother Khasbulat also died from fragments and a shock wave. Dzhambulat was forced to lead the regiment.
May 15, 1919 Dzhambulat Kanukov crashed in a plane crash along with two mechanics. The cause of the disaster was engine failure: the Austrian Kubis, who was suspected of sympathizing with the Red Army, poured metal shavings into the airplane’s engine. Kubish tried to escape from the scene of the crime, but was shot down by the centurion of Evsk.
In the Ukrainian Galician Army, Dzhambulat on the Polish front won only 9 victories from all 16 ZUNR aviation victories in the war against Poland.
