The city and port of Talcahuano are located on the southwestern shore of the bay, Penko on the southeastern shore, and Tom on the northeast.
In the northern part of the bay lies Kirikina Island, which divided the entrance to the bay into two parts: Boca Chica and Boca Grande. The Boca Chica Strait between the Tumbes Peninsula and Kirikin Island is 2 km wide (1.5 km in its narrowest part), the depth of the strait is about 15 meters, but the extensive shallows along its shores narrow the navigable part to 400 meters. The width of the Boca Grande Strait is 5 km, the depth is 35 meters, which allows large vessels to pass through it.
February 27, 2010 in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile north of the bay, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred , causing a tsunami with a height of more than two meters [2] . A wave threw boats and small vessels ashore.
