Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is one of the sixteen US Department of Energy's national laboratories . The main objective of the Laboratory is the development, creation and testing of non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons . It consists of two branches, one of which is located next to the Los Alamos Laboratory , and the second is next to the Livermore Laboratory , which are directly related to the development of weapons for the US nuclear arsenal . The laboratory took part in the US state program Advanced Simulation and Computing Program for the creation of supercomputers that would allow the United States to monitor the state of its nuclear arsenal after the announcement in October 1992 of a moratorium on nuclear testing . Under this program, ASCI Red and ASC Red Storm supercomputers were installed in the Laboratory, which were among the most powerful supercomputers of their time.
