Description of symbols and history of the coat of arms

The historical emblem of Uglich was created at the beginning of the 18th century. On January 12, 1722, the Heroldmeister Office was established by the Emperor Peter the Great’s Decree under the Senate [2] . The companion of the heraldmeister (“composer of the arms”) was appointed an Italian by birth, Count F.M. Santi . Based on information sent from different cities of Russia, he created the first city emblems. The registry of 97 emblems composed by F. Santi also includes the coat of arms of Uglich. However, historians refute this assertion and make the assumption: that the coat of arms of Uglich (as well as several other emblems of the cities) is included in the list of emblems made by Santi without being compiled by him, or Santi made up the emblem without “knowledge” from the ground (in July 1727, the assistant heraldmeister F. Santi was arrested for participating in the conspiracy) [3] .

The earliest image of Tsarevich Dmitry, who was killed on May 15, 1591 in Uglich , as a symbol of Uglich, dates back to November 13, 1727 , at this time the preparatory development of emblems for regimental banners began. The Uglitsky Infantry Regiment was formed in 1708 as the Bils Grenadier Regiment (1st Grenadier), from 1725 - the Von Hagen Infantry Regiment, in 1727 it was called Uglitsky [4] [5] .

In June 1728, the Supreme Privy Council issued a decree on the introduction of a new model of regimental banners with state and city emblems. In 1729, under the supervision of the Director-General over the fortification of General B.K. Minikh and with the participation of the artist Andrei Baranov (painter A.D. Menshikov ), the Banner of Stamps was compiled. On March 8, 1730, new emblems for regimental banners were approved. The emblem of the Uglich regiment in the register under number 38 had the following description: “against the new prince, Prince Dimitri in royal attire, a prince’s hat with a cross, a knife in his right hand, under the bosom of the lamb’s left hand, a red box, a robe and a gold hat” [5] [6] .

Coats of arms of 1730 were to be placed not only on regimental banners, but also on seals, with which governors and governors sealed all papers, except for particular ones. Thus, the coat of arms of the Uglich regiment from this period began to acquire the status of the city coat of arms [3] .

Highest Approved Emblem

The historical emblem of Uglich was highly approved on August 31 ( September 11 ) by 1778 by Empress Catherine II along with other emblems of the cities of Yaroslavl governorate [7] . Law No. 14765 in the Complete Collection of Laws of the Russian Empire is dated June 20 ( July 1 ), 1778 , on this day the Senate only brought the emblems to the “Highest Confirmation ” to the Empress, the very approval of the emblems took place on August 31, 1778, as evidenced by the date on the attached to the law drawings of emblems [8] .

The original description of the coat of arms of Uglich read:

"In the scarlet field, the image of Dimitry Tsarevich."

- PSZRI, 1778, Law No. 14765 [7] .

Coat of arms of the Uglich province

The coat of arms of Uglich, approved in 1778, was finally compiled by the comrade of the heraldmeister, college adviser von Enden, while he used the prototype of the coat of arms of the Uglich regiment of 1730 and the Uglich province of the Moscow province , which existed until 1775. The round fresco with the coat of arms of the Uglich province is kept in the Uglich State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. The inscription on the fresco above the head of the Saint: “S. V. TSREVICH DIMITRII UGLETSKII ”, above her is the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands, and around the circumference:“ Herp of the Uglitsa Government ”. The image of the coat of arms of the Uglich province was somewhat different from the regimental coat of arms. The prince was portrayed with a golden halo, but without a lamb under his left hand, instead of a princely hat with a cross, he began to have a crown decorated with gold and precious stones [5] .

In 1863, during the Köhne heraldic reform, a draft of the new coat of arms of the county town of Uglich in the Yaroslavl province was developed (not officially approved): In the scarlet shield Tsarevich Dmitry in a gold dress, holds a golden long knife in his right hand. In the free part of the coat of arms of the Yaroslavl province. The shield is crowned with a silver walled crown and is surrounded by golden ears of wheat connected by the Alexander ribbon " [9] .

Coat of arms in the Soviet and post-Soviet period

In the Soviet period, the historical coat of arms of Uglich was not used. In the 80s of the 20th century, heraldic souvenir badges were issued that depicted the Uglich bell , but the head of the atheist movement in Uglich, A. M. Lobashkov, insisted that these badges be discontinued [5] .

At the end of the 20th century, the city of Uglich and the Uglich district were merged into the Uglich municipal district. On March 31, 1999, the emblem of the Uglich municipal district was approved. As the official symbols, the emblem of the city of Uglich and the Uglich municipal district approved the historical emblem of the city of Uglich in 1778 [10]

After the municipal reform and the abolition of the Uglich municipal district, its coat of arms completely “inherited” the Uglich city settlement. In the decision of the Municipal Council of the city settlement of Uglich of the Yaroslavl region dated March 30, 2007 No. 97 “On approval of the Regulation on the coat of arms of the city settlement of Uglich” it was said: “To establish as the official symbol of the city settlement of Uglich the coat of arms of the city settlement of Uglich on the model of the historical coat of arms of the city of Uglich in 1778” [1] .

The coat of arms of Uglich passed a heraldic examination and was entered into the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation under registration number 506 [9] .
